A dream girl's dream comes true as Sheryl Lee Ralph wins long-overdue Emmy

Acceptance speech

At 65, Sheryl Lee Ralph became only the second Black woman to win an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in the 74 years of the award show that honors the best in television. Her portrayal of a dedicated veteran grade scool teacer in ''Abbott Elementary'' made her dream of getting recgonized for her work come true. Jaquee Harry (who played sandra in "227") was the first 35 years earlier.

An original Dream Girl, Ralph's 40+ year career began in the late 70s. She is best known for her role as the mom in 'Moesha.' Her well-rounded acting portfolio also includes ''The Mighty Quinn, ''Sister Act II'', ''Barber Shop'', and ''It's a Living.''

Numerous talented Black women actresses have performed arguably award-winning work in sitcoms and drama series in the span of time between Harry's and Ralph's honors but were consistently snubbed. (Neicy Nash, Wanda Sykes, Elise Neal and Gabrielle Union to name a few. ) This win solidifies what her fans already knew -- that her work is commendable at the highest level.
