Former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst jumps to her death

The pageant world is mourning the tragic loss of one of their own.

Police say Cheslie Kryst, a former Miss USA (2019), jumped to her death in the early hours of January 30. She was found death on the ground after plummeting from the 60-story Orion luxury apartment building in Manhattan, New York.

When she became Miss USA in 2019, Kryst was one of three Black women holding national titles at the same time including Miss America and Miss Teen USA. It was the first time in history this trifecta occurred in pageantry. She held the title longer than any other pageant queen due to the pandemic (557 days.)

The young beauty queen had said in past interviews that she managed her mental health by seeing a counselor, decompressing after work and exercise.

The family released the following statement: “In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie.” the former beauty queen’s family said in a statement Sunday. Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined.

“Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on EXTRA,” her family said. “But most importantly as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor and colleague — we know her impact will live on.”

Possessing both beauty and brains, Kyrst, 30 was a North Carolina attorney civil litigation attorney with Poyner Spruill in Charlotte and mental health advocate. The law firm remembered her in a statement as a source of radiant light. “She was a passionate advocate both in and out of the courtroom,” the statement said. “She deeply cared about people and everyone who worked with her was better for it.”

She was also a former athlete and after her reign as Miss USA ended she became a correspondent for Extra TV. The entertainment news company said in a statement, “Our hearts are broken. Cheslie was not just a vital part of our show. She was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff. Our deepest condolences to all her family and friends.”

Sources say she left everything to her mother who was also Miss North Carolina in 2002.

Miss Kryst was the second Black person this month to die from suicide following the passing of Ian Alexander, Jr. the son of actress Regina King.
