House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rips up a copy of Pres. Donald Trump's State of the Union address.
(The Slice): Today Nancy Pelosi will serve for the final time as the House Speaker. She will stand alongside fellow California Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris as she administers the oath of office to incoming congressional legislators. The departure of Pelosi means the return of male dominance in the upper ranks of U.S. government -- that the rare presence of two women in the chamber at the same time was short lived.
As Pelosi exits, the next Speaker will be a man.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is now bidding for the job. He will need 218 votes to secure the position and appears to have the support with Republicans having a numeric advantage in the House of Representatives. McCarthy has said online that he will bring accountability to The Hill, while he avoided holding Trump accountable for the Jan. 6 Insurrection.
Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was nominated to become the House Minorioty leader. He will be the Black man in hisotry to lead a political party in the U.S. Congress.
Nancy Pelosi gave the Jan. 6 Committee investigating the riot her blessing and called out Republicands for downplaying Trump's influence on it.
Pelosi was the first woman to hold the position and will be remembered for keeping the caucus viable under the tumultuous reign of Pres. Donald Trump.
The House Speaker, 82, was chosen for the job the first time in 2007. In 2019 she made history again upon being voted in a second time. Third-in-line to the presidency – she was a vivacious leader who used her authority and voice to win votes for bills with widespread, bi-partisan benefits.
Perhaps her special touch came from being a homemaker before she ran foe office. David Axeleid, CNN Senior Political contributor called tge mother of 4 a "den mother shepherding her legislators." He opined that she will be remembered as a political star.
Madam Speaker served for 20 years and might have continued but for a tragic assault on her husband Paul lat year. It was shortly after he was brutally attacked and hospitalized that she announced she would retire.
