Officer charged with murder 2 in death of Partick Lyola

The Grand Rapids police who shot Patrick Lyoya on April 4 will be charged with second degree murder.

Grand Rapids officer Christopher Schurr dischared his friearm into the back of Lyoya's head while stuggling to arest him.


At an arraignment on Friday, the officer's attorney said his actions were justified.


Lyoya, a refugee from the Congo, fled on foot after initially being pulled over for a traffic stop about his license plate. Schurr and Lyoya tussled when he was caught. He said he shot the unarmed motorist because he would not let go of his taser. Lyoya died of a fatal shot to the back of his head.

This killin sparked national outrage as yet another unmarmed Black man was shot in cold blood by an officer of the law in teh state of Michigan.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said Schurr turned himself in.
