The Queen of England has died at the age of 96. Queen Elizabeth, II having ruled for 70 years, was the longest ruling monarch in history.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” Buckingham Palace shared in a statement following earlier news that Her Majesty was under doctor's supervision and a call for her family to come.
Her son Prince Charles will now ascend to the throne upon coronation and his wife will Camilla will become the Queen Consort.
“The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family," he said.
“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”
A beloved and respected figure people were gathered outside of Buckingham Palace hours before er passing according to British press.
Formally named Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, the Queen was born on April 17, 1926. She was the daughter of Gregory VI and wife of Prince Phillip of Edinburgh who proceeded her in death on April 9, 2021 at the age of 99. She and er sister Margaret (d. 2002) were the great-great granddaughters of Queen Victoria.
The UK flag now flies at half staff in her honor.
