SUMMARY: Nine months ago a family arrived to the U.S. from Chile to escape violence. Just before Christmas they lost their 14-year-old in an officer-involved shooting by the LAPD. An investigation in this tragedy is underway. Attorney Ben Crump is representing the family as they seek justice.
The bodycam video of officers involved in a North LA store shooting was edited and released on Monday It revealed the events that led up to a 14-year old girl being fatally shot while in the dressing room of a Burlington Coat Factory. Valentina Orellana-Peralta, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, apparently catching a bullet intended for an attacker in the store. The police were called to the scene on a report that a suspect was assaulting several people. The suspect was seen on camera attacking two women. Daniel Elena Lopez, 24 was shot and died at the scene. Authorities believe a bullet ricocheted off the floor and hit Peralta in the dressing room where she died in her mother's arms. Coroners filed Peralta's death as a homicide.
According to the Los Angeles Times LAPD officers have shot 38 people — 18 of them fatally -- in 2021 alone.
