What happens next after Trump's third indictment

Former Pres. Donald Trump faces a maximmum of 20 years in prison for charges related to obstructing the election process. The timeline of what happens next will quickly begin this week in a DC court. He will face a magistrate judge tomorrow. Judge Tanya Tutkan will review charges and oversee his arrest and arraignment. A trial comes next. The aim is to go to trial in 90 days. Trump is expected to plead not guilty to his third indictment in four months.

Special Counsel Jack Smith said that Trump targeted "a bedrock function of the U.S. government" when he refused to release the presidency knowing he had lost the election. He wrote that he had a right to lie but not to coerce others to violate the law. On Tuesday Trump was charged with obstruction of the election process. Four charges include:

Trump's team swiftly responsed to the outcome saying this is a political hit to defelct attention from Pres. joe Biden's performance and the weaponizing of the Department of Justice. John Lauro, Trump's attorney reacted to the charges saying this is an attack on free speech. Meanwhile in the polls, Trump is the clear frontrunner in a crowded field of Republicans running for president in 2024.
