Special Counsel Jack Smith said that Trump targeted "a bedrock function of the U.S. government" when he refused to release the presidency knowing he had lost the election. He wrote that he had a right to lie but not to coerce others to violate the law. On Tuesday Trump was charged with obstruction of the election process. Four charges include:
-Conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government -Conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding -Obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding -Conspiracy to infringe on citizens civil righs
Trump's team swiftly responsed to the outcome saying this is a political hit to defelct attention from Pres. joe Biden's performance and the weaponizing of the Department of Justice.
John Lauro, Trump's attorney reacted to the charges saying this is an attack on free speech.
Meanwhile in the polls, Trump is the clear frontrunner in a crowded field of Republicans running for president in 2024.
