(The Slice): John Hinckley, Jr., the man who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan 41 years ago, was released back into society on June 15 with no conditions. He tried to kill the president to impress actress Jodi Foster who he had an absessive crush on. Although Reagan survived, the bullet was lodged an inch forom his heart. Apologetic for his actions, he is looking to ove forward in life.
A judge found the then 25-year-old not guilty by reason of insanity after he followed the president to a DC hotel where he'd spoken and pressed his way through a crowd, engaging 6 shots that injured Reagan, White House Rporter James Brady and a security gaurd. He spent decades confined in a psychiatric hospital. He had two unsuccessful suicide attempts while confined.
"After 41 years 2 months and 15 days, FREEDOM AT LAST!!!" Hinckley tweeted.Now 67, the professed Christian lives in living in Williamsburg, Va. He had been livi them for severla years with restrictions. With the limits offf Hinkley has the freedom to fulfill some of his dreams. He has plans to pursue music entertainment on a tour called the "Redemption Tour" this summer.
In his first TV interview, Mr,. HInkley spoke exclusively with CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett.
This is the first time a criminal who attemtped to kill a president has been let out of confinbement, a decsion approved by the Mental Health Board.
